Heritage

Roses Gap Recreation Centre acknowledges the Jardwadjali and Djab Wurrung people as the Traditional Owners of the land we live and work on, and we pay our respects to their Elders past, present and emerging.

Roses Gap and the Grampians, known by their traditional names of Barigar and Gariwerd, are areas of great significance to the Djab Wurrung and Jardwadjali people who have called the region home for thousands of years.

Gariwerd is connected to many of the ancient dreaming stories of the Aboriginal communities in South-Western Victoria, and is home to the largest concentration of rock art paintings and shelters in Southern Australia.

There are many great places online to explore the culture and history of Gariwerd. As a starting point, prior to your camp, Teachers may wish to help their students research the Gariwerd Creation Story and the six seasons of Gariwerd.

You can also explore more of the regions culture and history at Brambuk – The National Park and Cultural Centre which is located in Halls Gap.
